Town planning

While some towns and cities have evolved almost with a will of their own, there are those newer ones that have been planned to within an inch of their lives. It’s true that there are benefits to carefully thought out towns; the facilities and services can be available without having to travel for miles, and that in turn is good for the environment. However, I can’t help feeling these places lack character. Some are so soulless that you can quite easily forget where you are – the planners ensure that they differ so little from others laid out along similar lines that you could be anywhere.

Being a Town Planner

Planning a city was my dream as a youngster and I studied hard to gain qualifications in town planning. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be though. We aren’t always able to follow what the theory tells us we should and there is little chance to be creative. And the time it takes to get plans agreed is unimaginable. I think the most frustrating thing is that by the time the relevant consultations have been carried out and everything has got the sign off, the needs of the local population or the latest ideas may well have changed and everything seems out of date.
